Standards-Based Assessment

This method gives parents and teachers detailed insights into specific skills and knowledge of students, enhancing the consistency across grades and schools. It focuses solely on the mastery of content knowledge, teamwork, and behavioral expectations. This clear approach highlights students' strengths and precisely identifies areas where they may need more support.

Mastery Learning Model

In this model, students are allowed to work on a concept or skill until they achieve mastery. We assess their mastery level using a 4-point scale, ensuring a thorough understanding of each topic.

Hands-On Learning

We advocate a "Hands-On" learning approach, where subjects like Language Arts, History/Social Studies, Science, Technology, and Art are seamlessly integrated into project-based activities. This method encourages active participation and a deeper understanding of the subjects through practical application.

Project Based Learning (PBL)

Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real-world problems and challenges and acquire more profound knowledge. In this process, students use empathy to connect with an iterative human-centered design approach that allows them to practice applying a growth mindset as they develop grit and persistence. These standards are aligned with 21st Century Skills.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These standards align with those set by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning.

The Lab School places a high priority on the social-emotional development of every student. It's been part of our DNA from the very beginning.

Content Area Learning

The SNU Lab School uses a Standards-based report card. Unlike traditional report cards, where students receive one letter grade for reading, one for math, one for science, and so on, standards-based report cards provide more detail by reporting skill categories that align with specific content standards within each subject area.

Students learn best when their school experience is connected to real life. Our skills-based curriculum focuses on equipping students with required knowledge and appropriate life skills.
